Wonderful Woodcraft presents, Beginning woodworking for the woodworking beginner.

Wonderful Woodcraft presents. Beginning woodworking is right up at the top of your concerns if your new to this. Woodworking beginners should always have questions that need answers prior to starting any kind of Woodworking project.

I know when I first started back in High School, our shop teacher started us off in what I think is the best way to approach woodworking.

After he introduce himself he got right to the point. Had all of us answer these questions, ( I will try to remember them all).

1. Why are you here in this class?

2. Have you ever did any kind of woodworking before coming to this class?

3. Do you know anything about woodworking, and if so what do you know?

4. Do you know anything about using woodworking plans, or do you know what they are and why they are important?

5. Have you got knowledge of any tools and if so what do you know about them?

6. For those of you who do have knowledge of woodworking do you also have safety knowledge about it?

Over the course of the next few weeks he pounded home safety, safety, and more safety.

His words, Before anyone in this class ever touches any tools everyone in here must be able to pass the safety test with no less than 95%.

That beginner woodworking safety test was given each Friday until that 95% was the lowest score in the class. If I remember correctly it was the 6th week when that finally happened. Yes we had some real bright kids in that class.

Ok, enough on the history lesson. Lets look at some of the things every woodworking beginner should consider before undertaking their first project.

Number 1, and most important of all is SAFETY, woodworking safely is not only necessary, it is a must. Beginning woodworking without safety is the number 1 cause of woodworking for beginners mishaps. Check out our SAFETY page for more.

Number 2 know what you want to do before you rush out and buy a ton of tools that you may never use. That is right have a plan first, even if you need to purchase one, they are very cost effective and simple plans are very low cost and some can even be gotten for free.

Here is a great book for anyone just starting our wonderful Hobby.

With woodworking fast becoming one of the most popular pastimes in the country, The Collins Complete Woodworker, from the editors of Woodworker's Journal, is the perfect introduction for anyone wanting to get better acquainted with this rewarding hobby.

Written in an easy-to-understand style and accompanied by hundreds of full-color photographs and illustrations, this encyclopedic reference covers tools and techniques in 16 lively chapters.

The chapters on woodworking equipment range from simple hand tools to stationary powered machinery (and just about everything in between) and explain not only how different tools work but their roles in the shop, with a special emphasis on safety.

Separate chapters are devoted to specific types of woodworking such as carving, woodturning, and veneering, while other chapters provide in-depth coverage of the materials of woodworking, from hardwood to hardware.

There are even special sections offering projects to challenge your growing skills, tips on shop resources, and a glossary of woodworking terminology.

Whether you have already discovered the lure of the wood shop or are just getting started, The Collins Complete Woodworker is the reference you've been looking for.

Check out our Woodworking Plans page for more information.

Number 3, only purchase what you need for your first project, including only the tools needed, beginning woodworking is a low cost hobby if you do it one step at a time.

Wonderful Woodcraft thinks, beginning woodworking and woodworking for beginners should be kept simple for at least the first 5 projects.

This keeps the cost minimal and also keeps mishaps down to a minimum.

And if for some reason you decide that woodworking is not for you you won't be stuck with hundreds or even thousands of dollars in tools not needed.

See our woodworking Projects page for some simple woodworking ideas.
