Lets use a Jewelry Box Is it Wonderful Woodcraft or is it just creative woodworking?
At Wonderful Woodcraft we like to use the following example.
A Jewelry Box or Curio Cabinets can be used to explain our thoughts about the difference between creative woodworking and wonderful woodcraft creators.
Instead of just making a jewelry box or curio cabinet a creator looks at them and sees all the different possibilities. They want to create something new.
Building something just isn't enough for them. They have decided to be creative in all that they do with wood. They are constantly looking at the ordinary and finding ways to turn it into masterpieces of wooden art.
Some may call it creative woodworking and to a certain point their right. But woodcraft creators go just a little further than just being creative.
They use woodworking crafts to find ways to maximize the use of their materials. They get the most amount of use from the least amount of space and materials, creative woodworking, no we do not think so.
Lets use the Jewelry Box as an example. Most Hobbyist and veterans have made at least a few of these. Their first couple, probably using plans that they followed closely.
After a while they stopped making them, fell into a routine because they were to easy to make. The same holds true for other projects that become to easy and wind up being routine to us.
We stop making them until someone request one or we want a few extra dollars in our pockets. We have entered the rut.
Some say it's all in your attitude, I do not agree. I find that anything that becomes routine also becomes boring.
Sure we can pretend that we love what we are doing, but we know even if no ones else does that were bored and in that rut.
Take a look at one of your old jewelry box plans, how could you spruce it up or personalize it? What could you change that would catch your eye if it was in a store? What would make it a Wonderful Woodcraft item?
Curio cabinets the same thing take out one of your old curio cabinets plans and follow the same process as you did with the jewelry Box.
If you can do this your on your way, you have started your climb out of the rut.
Always remember the art of woodworking is Finding new and better ways to create your masterpiece in wood.
