Wood Crafts is it Woodworking Art?
Wonderful Woodcraft believes that wood crafts is a form of woodworking art. There are so many beautiful wood crafted items in the world, some can only be called art. This page will present some more of our story on the rut. It will also , hopefully show that our changing the way we think about woodworking, was a major reason for our being able to get out of that rut. As you may of read on another page this is a long time hobby for me and us. Myself almost 40 years now. And yes I too, as most of us do, got into the rut without knowing I was in it. But thankfully I have a wife who did not fail in pointing it out to me. Even if it did take her a some time of listening to my complaints before she did. It was also her that first made the suggestion that maybe I should think about my woodworking the same way I do about my painting on canvas, as art. Thanks to her I have been able to completely see woodworking in a new light, it really is woodworking art when you find ways to customize it. I know it took time to get into that rut, and I know for a fact that I was deep into it when it was brought to my attention. This was almost 5 years ago now and at that time I was complaining about everything to do with woodworking, and I definitely did not think of it as woodworking art. Thankfully that period is over, forever.

Looking back it's hard to pin point when it first started, but I am able to see how it most likely progressed. A complaint here and there, maybe about time taken to complete a project, maybe about not having the right wood in stock for a project. My best guess is that it was gradual, and the complaints just kept building until finally that was the start of each project, a complaint about doing even the simple wood working projects.
Yes, I was truly entrenched in the rut, no such thing as wood crafts or woodworking art at his time. Just the thought of starting a project made me complain. No wonder my wife finally spoke up, I had to be making her miserable with all the complaints. Wonderful woodcraft, no way, it was all work and no fun. Those words, “ if it's not fun then don't do it.” made the difference and started my journey out of the rut. It was not all at once, it has been an ongoing journey and I will continue on this journey for the rest of my life. I will say that it has been a fun journey so far and that I am once again truly enjoying wood crafts, and that I do see it more as woodworking art now. Don't get me wrong I still do a lot of common simple woodworking, but even it is enjoyable now because I can, after completion of it find ways to turn it into wonderful woodcraft, a new customized piece. This is the true enjoyment of it all, becoming an wood crafts creator who sees new ways of doing each and every item completed, ways to customize them and say now this is a real work of art. If your in that woodworking rut I urge you to give this a try, take any of your simple projects and just find one thing that you can change about it that will improve it. That first step can be the start of becoming an wood crafts creator and seeing woodworking art in all your future projects.
If you will do this with two or three of your old projects, you should find that old feeling starting to return, you know that feeling of enjoying and really liking what your doing. I do this every time I complete a woodworking craft project now, even with the ones I have made custom woodcraft. It is never to late to start, and the reward can definitely be worth the effort of trying. Most importantly, do not try to rush the process of getting out of that rut, it took time to get in it, so be willing to give it some time to get out of it. Once your out you can look back and see that with your new way thinking you will never again get into the rut, HECK your having to much FUN now.
